Frequently Asked Questions About Pet Wellness Exams
Do indoor pets still need routine wellness exams?
Yes, indoor pets still benefit from routine wellness exams. Even pets that spend most of their time indoors can develop dental disease, weight changes, arthritis, allergies, skin issues, or age-related conditions that may not be obvious at home.
Can a wellness visit help with behavior or anxiety concerns?
Yes, a wellness visit can be a helpful time to talk about behavior changes, anxiety, hiding, restlessness, increased vocalization, new accidents in the home, or changes in sleep. Sometimes these changes are related to stress, pain, aging, or underlying health concerns.
Should I bring my pet’s medical records to a wellness exam?
If your pet is new to the clinic, recently adopted, or has received care elsewhere, bringing medical records can help your veterinarian better understand their health history. Vaccine records, medication lists, previous lab results, and adoption paperwork can all be helpful.
Can wellness exams help pets with allergies or skin problems?
Yes, wellness exams can help identify signs of allergies, skin irritation, ear issues, excessive scratching, licking, or recurring infections. Your veterinarian can evaluate your pet’s skin and coat and recommend next steps if allergies or another condition may be affecting their comfort.
Is a wellness exam a good time to discuss microchipping?
Yes, a wellness exam can be a good opportunity to ask about microchipping, especially for new pets, puppies, kittens, or pets that spend time outdoors. Microchipping can help improve the chances of being reunited with your pet if they are ever lost.
