APPOINTMENT

The doctors and medical team at the Buckley Veterinary Hospital provide a wide variety of services for your companion and small animal needs with more than thirty years of combined veterinary experience. Our goal is to provide quality preventative, medical and surgical care in a manner that is flexible to your needs.

SURGERY

Buckley Veterinary Hospital is a fully-equipped surgical suite with trained veterinarians who perform a wide range of general surgical procedures. We carefully examine each pet prior to surgery and recommend every patient have a pre-anesthetic blood test to evaluate their internal organ function. After examination, anesthetic drugs are individually selected for your pet based on the procedure, their age, breed, and health condition.

Surgeries performed at Buckley Veterinary Hospital include:

  • Spay/neuter
  • Oral surgery
  • Many orthopedic surgeries, including fracture repair, hip (FHO) repair, cruciate (ACL) repair and more
  • Abdominal surgery
  • Urinary tract surgery
  • Cesarean section
  • Growth removal
  • Laceration repair
  • Emergency surgery (e.g. foreign object retrieval, wound repair, others as needed
  • and moreu2026.

Before Surgery

Before surgery, your pet will be screened and anesthetics will be hand-selected depending on your pet’s breed, age, health, and other factors. Blood tests may also be done to confirm your pet’s liver, heart, and kidneys are functioning properly and your pet is a good candidate for anesthesia.

During Surgery

During surgery, we have a medically trained staff member solely responsible for monitoring your pet’s vital signs. Their main priority is supervising your pet’s heart rate and rhythm, respiratory functions, body temperature, and maintaining proper oxygen levels for your pet.

After Surgery

We believe it’s important to keep a line of communication open with you every step of the way. Our staff will ensure we have up-to-date contact information to keep you fully informed about your pet’s surgery, progress, and recovery. Oftentimes, pain medication is sent to keep your pet as comfortable as possible. Our staff will provide post-operative care instructions, and we will explain everything you need to know to care for your pet at home.

Please speak with one of our staff members if you have any specific questions regarding your pet’s surgery or post-operative care.

DENTAL CARE

Dental care is an important part of your pet’s wellness care, and professional dental treatments are among the most common procedures we perform for both cats and dogs. At Buckley Veterinary Hospital, we will perform a thorough dental examination during your pet’s annual wellness exam.

Professional Preventative Dental Care For Your Pet

Our professional dental care includes complete ultrasonic scaling, root planing, polishing, and extractions as needed. We place your pet under anesthesia and remove plaque and tartar using hand instruments and power scaling equipment (just like your dentist does!). We give your pet’s teeth a thorough ultrasonic cleaning and polishing. We will perform a comprehensive oral exam and check each tooth for movement, gingival pockets, fractures, malocclusion, and periodontal disease, and perform dental x-rays.

Preventative Non-Anesthetic Dental Cleaning

At Buckley Veterinary Hospital, we recognize that pets need special care, specific to their individual needs. For instance, some pets have a great temperament and minimal dental needs. In this case, our trained staff will evaluate and educate you, as a pet owner, on the benefits of a non-anesthetic teeth cleaning, otherwise known as a PDCA (Preventative Dental Cleaning and Assessment). A PDCA is a means to maintain your pet’s teeth while awake, without the use of anesthesia. The pet rests comfortably in the trained technicians lap while they assess, clean and polish your pet’s teeth. This procedure will allow us to truly provide your pet with a treatment plan for their specific dental needs. To learn more about Animal Dental Care visit http://animaldental.care/

At-Home Pet Dental Care

We also recommend regular home care to prevent the buildup of plaque on your pet’s teeth. Nowadays, there are several products available to help keep plaque to a minimum. For a list of accepted dental products of the Veterinary Oral Health Council please visit http://www.vohc.org/all_accepted_products.html. Plaque, which is an accumulation of bacteria, can progress to periodontitis, which is characterized by pockets of chronic infection, oral pain, and severe infections. If left untreated, it will eventually loosen and destroy the teeth, possibly leading to bone loss. The infection under the gum line can also spread to the liver, kidneys, and heart.

  • Common signs of dental disease in pets include:
  • Bad breath
  • Bleeding from the mouth
  • Loose teeth
  • Teeth that are discolored or covered in tartar
  • Drooling or dropping food from the mouth
  • Loss of appetite or weight loss
  • Your pet shies away from you when you touch the mouth area

If your dog or cat exhibits any of the signs of dental disease, please call us at your earliest convenience to arrange for a dental exam.

DIAGNOSTICS

At Buckley Veterinary Hospital, we have state-of-the-art diagnostic technology to help us identify underlying conditions in your pet. Our hospital offers complete laboratory testing with results while you wait, radiographic imaging, ultrasonography and an extensive list of laboratory testing to be done off-site.
We provide the following diagnostic services:

Digital Radiology

X-rays are the most common imaging tool we use to examine your dog or cat’s organs and their cardiopulmonary, gastrointestinal, reproductive, and urinary systems. This is a non-invasive procedure allowing the veterinarian to get a better look at the conditions affecting your pet.
There are many benefits to using digital x-rays over film x-rays. Digital x-rays have a higher image quality compared to traditional x-rays, making it much easier to view and interpret. These images are instantly available to the veterinarian, which means less time away from your pet and a faster, more accurate diagnosis. There is also lessened exposure to radiation with digital radiology thanks to computer – and it’s more environmentally friendly!

When digital radiology is used:

  • To find foreign objects or materials within the body that may have been ingested
  • To diagnose fractures, bone and/or joint abnormalities, and various injuries
  • To screen for abnormalities within the heart, lungs, urinary, and digestive organs
  • To screen for certain types of cancer

Laboratory

We have an in-house laboratory featuring state-of-the-art equipment allowing us to quickly and accurately evaluate and diagnose your pet’s condition. No need to find a specialty veterinary hospital – we provide it within our hospital. We are proud to offer results while you wait, for real-time results that give you added peace of mind. This allows us to immediately diagnose the problem and to treat your pet as soon as possible.

Blood Pressure Monitoring

We monitor your pet’s blood pressure while under anesthesia, suffering shock, or in other life-threatening conditions. We also evaluate your pet’s blood pressure during routine annual or biannual check-ups.

Anesthesia Monitoring

While your pet is under anesthesia, we monitor all vitals to make sure your pet is safe and unharmed. We monitor your pet’s heart activity, ECG, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, respiratory system, and temperature throughout every stage of surgery.

PUPPY CARE

The first wellness exam is crucial in establishing the health of your puppy. Premature puppies may suffer more from medical issues as their immune system is not fully mature, and may be more at risk for certain health concerns. Puppies that have not had adequate medical care prior to adoption may have pre-existing conditions which should be addressed. At Buckley Veterinary Hospital, our puppy exam will ensure that your new companion will be on his or her way to growing up healthy and strong.

Your Puppy’s First Visit

We ask that you bring the health information provided to you by the seller or shelter on your first visit with us, which should include a previous history of vaccines and deworming, as well as a fresh stool sample(ideally less than 12 hours old). Please bring your puppy on a leash or in a dog carrier.
At your puppy’s first visit with us, we will perform a comprehensive examination and check for internal and external parasites. Puppies will need a series of vaccinations during their first year of life to protect them from many dangerous (but preventable) diseases, and we will develop a vaccination plan specifically for your puppy. We will discuss any questions you may have concerning care for your pet including diet and nutrition, behavioral issues, integrating the new puppy into your home, and house training.

Your puppy’s first exam will include:

  • A comprehensive physical exam
  • Intestinal parasite screening
  • Intestinal parasite deworming (if necessary)
  • Development of a vaccination program based on your puppy’s lifestyle
  • Flea and heartworm prevention
  • Behavior and housetraining recommendations
  • Nutritional counseling

Vaccines and Your Puppy

At Buckley Vet, we believe in designing a personalized vaccine protocol for each puppy to maximize the protection against any diseases your puppy is likely to be exposed to. There are many diseases that are preventable through the scheduled protocol of vaccines, so it is important to vaccinate your puppy against the diseases to which he or she may be exposed.

KITTEN CARE

The first wellness exam is critical in establishing the health of your kitten, so it is important to bring your kitten in for an exam as soon as possible. Premature kittens may suffer more from medical issues as their immune system is not fully mature, and may be more at risk for certain health issues. Kittens who have not had adequate medical care prior to adoption may have pre-existing conditions that should be addressed. At Buckley Veterinary Hospital, our kitten exam will ensure that your new companion will be on his or her way to growing up healthy and strong.

Your Kitten’s First Visit

Please bring your kitten in an enclosed carrier along with all veterinary records or other paperwork you have pertaining to your kitten’s care. Also, please bring a fresh stool sample (ideally less than 12 hours old). At your kitten’s first visit with us, we will perform a comprehensive examination and check for internal and external parasites. Kittens will need a series of vaccinations during their first year of life to protect them from many dangerous (but preventable) diseases, and we will develop a vaccination plan specifically for your kitten. We will discuss any questions you may have concerning care for your pet including: diet and nutrition, behavioral issues, integrating the new kitten into your home, and litter training.

Your kitten’s first exam will include:

  • A comprehensive physical exam
  • Optional screening for viruses specific to felines, such as Feline Leukemia Virus and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus
  • Intestinal parasite (worms) screening and deworming if necessary
  • Vaccines based on your kitten’s current age and expected lifestyle
  • Flea and internal parasite protection
  • Behavior and house training recommendations
  • Nutritional counseling

Vaccines and Your Kitten

We believe in designing a personalized vaccine schedule for each kitten to maximize the protection against any diseases your kitten is likely to be exposed to. There are many diseases that are preventable through the regular use of vaccines, so it is important to vaccinate your kitten against the diseases to which he or she may be exposed

SENIOR PET CARE

Annual preventative care is even more important for senior animals to prevent or delay the diseases that older animals are more prone to, such as osteoarthritis, hormone disorders, organ failure, cancer, and disease of the kidney, heart, and liver. Animals age at a rate of five to seven times that of humans, so regular wellness visits are strongly recommended to make sure that your pet’s healthcare needs are being met.

At Buckley Veterinary Hospital, we offer programs tailored specifically for the needs of senior dogs and senior cats including a complete blood count, urinalysis, blood-chemistry panel, and parasite evaluation. Our veterinarians can also suggest formulated prescription diets for your pet, whose changing nutritional needs will benefit from specialized food. Keeping your pet active is also helpful in slowing the deterioration of senses associated with the aging process. Please speak with our veterinarians to learn more about keeping your senior pet healthy.

PHARMACY

Buckley Veterinary Hospital is proud to provide an in-house pharmacy, fully stocked with the latest veterinary medications for your family pet. Having a fully stocked pharmacy provides our clients with many benefits and conveniences such as:

  • Allows us to discuss dosing instructions and/or possible product interactions and any potential side effects with you.

MICROCHIPPING

Microchips are tiny devices that provide a permanent and unalterable identifier for your dog or cat. We strongly recommend microchip implantation for all animals. These safe and inexpensive chips dramatically increase the chances of being reunited in the unfortunate event your pet is lost.

At Buckley Veterinary Hospital, we can microchip your dog or cat during their annual exam or when it gets spayed or neutered. It is a simple procedure like a vaccination, and no anesthesia is required. If your pet was rescued from a shelter or adopted from another owner, we can quickly search the database to see if a chip has already been implanted.

Any pet found by a shelter can be easily scanned for a microchip. The identifier found in this device will allow you to be contacted as soon as possible so that your pet can return home safely. In addition to performing recoveries, many chip manufacturers also have support services that will proactively search for pets as soon as they are reported missing and are available 24/7.

Please visit the AVMA’s website for more information and answers to frequently asked questions about microchip implantation. The Pet Microchip Lookup website is another helpful resource for locating owners of lost pets based on the microchip number that operates independently of microchip companies.

LASER THERAPY

Laser therapy is a non-invasive, pain-free alternative to prescription pain medication. It effectively treats a variety of painful conditions, which in many cases will allow your pet to return to normal activities pain-free. Laser Therapy reduces inflammation, pain and helps wounds heal faster. Results can often be seen after the first treatment session. Most conditions have treatment plans that range from 6-10 sessions.

What is laser therapy?

Laser therapy is a therapeutic treatment that uses light energy for tissue healing and pain reduction. The light energy penetrates damaged tissues and stimulates cellular activity. As a result, the cells of tendons, ligaments, and muscles repair themselves. This reduces pain in the area and speeds recovery.

What are the benefits?

  • No known side effects
  • Painless and noninvasive
  • Drug-free
  • Rapid relief of pain
  • Strong anti-inflammatory effects
  • Timely healing of strains and sprains
  • Immediate improvement of local blood circulation
  • Rapid repair of superficial injuries, such as wounds and ulcers
